Color Representing Race
These maps (including the above image) were created by Eric Fischer and were featured on the blog LAist.  It’s amazing to see divisions in Los Angeles that you may never know of without seeing a visual like this.  These maps are just visually incredibly beautiful, regardless of the information they convey.
You can find more cities on his Flickr page.

Interesting blog post about architect’s websites and how difficult they can be to navigate. The alternative the author discusses, using Architizer to access architect information, seems like a great visual way to find an architect.  It takes ideas from Facebook, LinkedIn and other social networking sites to  create an architectural community online.  I’m not convinced that clients would use the site to find an architect, but if it gains steam it just might be a viable player in architectural marketing.

LA Intelligentsia #3
Big News! My favorite local coffee shop is opening a third Southern California location, this time in Pasadena.  Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea, originally out of Chicago, IL, has an innovative way of serving customers.  Their Venice location is set up with individual barista stands.  Customers go up to each barista and place an order, rather than being filtered through a long line, as most coffee shops operate.  The design is efficient in serving customers (much more so than their Silverlake location) and gives you an opportunity to chat with the barista while they serve you individually.  Not only are their drinks and snacks delicious, they give you a unique and well-designed third placeenvironment to enjoy both in Venice and Silverlake.
Their new Pasadena location is being designed by Ana Henton, who also designed Intelligentsia’s Venice coffee shop.  Henton is a principal of Mass Architecture & Design, a small firm located in Silverlake, just a few blocks from my house.
In an interview with LA Weekly, Henton talked about having Intelligentsia as a client,“Because the lifespan of these places is short, it’s a real opportunity to do something different. But that only happens if the client is willing to go there. With Intelligentsia Venice, they REALLY wanted to go there, so that was great for us. I call [it] “micro-architecture.” It was really about these pieces. They wanted the machines to be completely reconfigured. They were a client who knew exactly how they work, and what works.”

How the iPhone is Infiltrating Architecture Firms

Interesting article and video on how RTKL has started using the iPhone for about half their staff in everyday practice.  Many architects seem to have adopted this tool to improve their business, but RTKL seems to have taken it to a new level.

Fascinating story on an architect who lost his vision.  Architects are geared so much towards the visual; it’s interesting to hear how else the profession and buildings can be interpreted.

Station Fire from the Air
A few weeks ago I flew directly over the Angeles National Forest, where the Station Fire burned for over a month.  I was able to take a few photos showing just a portion of the huge area (160,000 acres) burned by fire.

The new Gold Line Extension (from Downtown’s Union Station to East LA) opened this weekend.  Check out the link above for photos of artwork at the new stations.

Best places to Trick-or-Treat in LA this Halloween from Zillow

1.    Venice 2.    Los Feliz 3.    Westwood
 4.    Silver Lake
 5.    Beverly Hills
Funny commentary from Curbed LA:
“Please don’t take your kids to these neighborhoods on Halloween!  Venice, Los Feliz, and Silver Lake are full of young, single hipsters who will be too busy pre-gaming and decking themselves out in elaborately obscure costumes to deal with your kids.”
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
